Submission Guidelines

How to submit your work for consideration in the 75th Annual NCS Divisional Reuben Awards.

January Deadlines

Monday, 1/4/2021

  • Call for entries. Submissions can be sent to judges from this date.

Friday, 1/22/2021

  • Deadline for sample submissions in all awards categories (Rules and Guidelines below).

Call For Entries: 2020 Reuben Divisional Awards

The National Cartoonists Society has begun its annual call for entries for consideration for the NCS Divisional Reuben Awards recognizing excellence in professional cartooning.

  • You do not have to be a member of the NCS to enter.
  • There is no fee for submissions.
  • All submissions must complete the online entry form and comply with division requirements.
  • A sample of work may only be submitted to ONE division–no duplicates.
  • The Divisional Reuben Awards recognize individuals for their artistic excellence in cartoon arts.
  • Only work published between the dates of January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020 can be considered. Submitted work must be accompanied by verification of the date of first publication or it will be disqualified–see detailed instructions below.

Winners will be announced at the Reuben Awards, summer 2021

In the interest of ensuring that the NCS Divisional Reuben Awards are representative of the very best work produced in each category, and that all of our regional chapters have the opportunity to be involved in the nomination process, the following procedures will be followed.

The regional NCS chapters will jury the following divisions: Newspaper Panel, Newspaper Strip, Gag Cartoon, Editorial Cartoons and the Variety Entertainment division. The results of the chapter nominations from these five divisions will be added together and the top 8 nominees in each division will be voted for online by the entire NCS voting membership.

The following divisions will be juried by specialty juries due to the length and/or complexity of the work being considered: Book Illustration, Magazine/Newspaper Illustration, Greeting Cards, Comic Books, Graphic Novels, Advertising/Product Illustration, Online Comics – Short Form, Online Comics – Long Form, Feature Animation, Television Animation and Online Animation division.

Submission Process for All Divisions

The safety of our juries is of utmost importance.  Due to COVID-19, all submissions and entry forms will be submitted digitally this year in order to eliminate the need for handling physical materials.

1. Review division-specific instructions below.

2. Complete the online entry form at the bottom of this page (GO TO ENTRY FORM).

3. On the entry form you will provide:

  • Your Name
  • Which division you are entering
  • Email and Contact Information
  • Short Bio (optional)

4.  Upload work samples using the entry form.
Please follow division-specific guidelines provided below.

5. Upload PROOF OF 2020 PUBLICATION using the entry form.
Failure to provide proof of publication date may result in disqualification.

6. Submit the form by January 22, 2021 and receive an email confirmation of your entry.

How to Submit Proof of 2020 Publication

REQUIRED FOR ALL DIVISIONS

Proof of 2020 publication date for each submitted sample of work MUST be included by uploading a separate proof file using the entry form. Failure to provide proof of publication date may result in disqualification.

Examples of proof:

  • if the submitted work itself has the date clearly visible you will also submit the work in the proof section of the entry form
  • a scan of magazine table of contents with feature circled
  • dated product art or ad scanned from print, screenshot that shows publication date
  • documentation of print date from client, publisher, or syndicate
  • web link that shows date of publication
  • tearsheet or copyright page

Proof files may be JPEG, PDF, or DOC files.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE FOR:

NEWSPAPER PANEL CARTOONS NEWSPAPER COMIC STRIPS GAG CARTOONS EDITORIAL CARTOONS GREETING CARDS VARIETY ENTERTAINMENT MAGAZINE & NEWSPAPER ILLUSTRATION ADVERTISING & PRODUCT ILLUSTRATION

1. Complete the online entry form at the bottom of this page (GO TO ENTRY FORM)

2. Upload UP TO 8 TOTAL samples.

  • Upload each image as a separate JPEG/JPG file
  • SIZE: no larger than 3MB per file
  • FILE NAME FORMAT:

Files will be viewed by jurors in alphabetical order based on your  file names. Please number them in the order you wish them to be viewed.

3. Upload proof of 2020 publication (see detailed instructions prior to the division requirements)

ADDITIONAL SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

  • NEWSPAPER PANEL and NEWSPAPER STRIP: If you are submitting syndicated cartoons that run in both strip and panel format, you may submit to one of those divisions, but not both (your choice). Duplication of entries into multiple categories will result in disqualification.
  • VARIETY ENTERTAINMENT: This division is for panels and strips that focus on trivia, puzzles, educational content, etc.
  • GREETING CARD: If you are submitting samples in the Greeting Card category, the samples must be original greeting card designs that premiered in 2020. Gag cartoons or newspaper panel cartoons (or any previously published cartoons or illustrations) that have been repurposed as greeting cards will not be accepted.
    Failure to comply may result in disqualification.

Book Illustration, Graphic Novel, Comic Book Divisions

Due to COVID-19, we are asking for digital submissions to eliminate handling of physical materials.

BOOK ILLUSTRATION, GRAPHIC NOVELS, COMIC BOOKS: SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

1. Complete the online entry form at the bottom of this page (GO TO ENTRY FORM)

2. Submit UP TO 12 TOTAL PAGE SAMPLES using the following options:

  • JPEG/JPG image files
  • PDF/DOC files with images
  • PDF/DOC files with clickable links to active web pages

3. The entry form allows you to provide passwords or instructions for viewing links or files.

4. For files, upload each sample as a separate file.

  • SIZE: no larger than 3MB per file
  • FILE NAME FORMAT:

Files will be viewed by jurors in alphabetical order based on your  file names. Please number them in the order you wish them to be viewed.

5. If your file/link has more than 12 pages: use the form to indicate which 12 pages we should provide to the jurors. Otherwise only the first 12 pages will be used as your entry.

ONLINE COMICS DIVISIONS: Short and Long Form

GUIDELINES FOR ALL ONLINE COMICS SUBMISSIONS

  • Submissions must be web-only publications (any work also syndicated in print should be submitted to the proper print division above)
  • Submissions must have shown consistent timely publication over the course of the 2020 calendar year (weekly, bi-weekly, multiple times a week, daily, etc.)
  • Creator must earn a significant part of their living directly from cartooning/comic art in order to meet the requirement that they be eligible for professional NCS membership (though, again, membership in the NCS is not a requirement for submitting.)

ADDITIONAL SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Submissions can be strip, single panel, single or partial page format
  • Submissions must be mainly self-contained gag, story, or narrative in each short comic, even if also part of an ongoing narrative
  • Submissions must be accompanied by documentation of date of first posting/release

ONLINE COMICS- LONG FORM

  • Submissions can be posted in single or multiple page format
  • Submissions must be ongoing narrative in serial form i.e. continuing comic book/graphic novel storyline
  • Submissions must be accompanied by documentation of date of first posting/release of each episode/page/segment
  • Submissions must have been posted in a minimum monthly or twelve times per year release schedule

ALL ONLINE COMICS: SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

1. Complete the online entry form at the bottom of this page (GO TO ENTRY FORM)

2. Submit UP TO 8 TOTAL SAMPLES using the following options:

  • JPEG/JPG/GIF image files
  • PDF/DOC files with clickable links to active web pages

3. The entry form allows you to provide passwords or instructions for viewing links or files.

ANIMATION DIVISIONS: Television, Feature, Online

GUIDELINES FOR ALL ANIMATION DIVISIONS

  • All three animation categories (Television, Feature and Online) are accepting submissions of individual artist’s work for consideration.  Entrants should be directly responsible for the creation of the art submitted, such as production designers, character designers, layout artists, background painters,
  • Submissions may be submitted by the artists themselves, or by the studios or other colleagues on the artist’s behalf.
  • If the samples contain work by anyone other than the applicant, please include a detailed written breakdown of which part of the art is attributed to the applicant.

ADDITIONAL SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

  • TELEVISION ANIMATION – All entries must be work created for episodes of a television or streaming series that aired for the first time during the 2020 calendar year.
  • FEATURE ANIMATION – All entries must be work created for a fully animated feature length movie released theatrically or via streaming service in the 2020 calendar year.
  • ONLINE ANIMATION (Online Animation is defined as any animated short that was shown for the first time online, not on television or in a theater.) – All entries must be work created for online viewing ONLY, and released in the 2020 calendar year.

ALL ANIMATION DIVISIONS: SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

2. For all Animation divisions, you may provide UP TO 8 TOTAL SAMPLES using the following options:

  • JPEG/JPG/GIF image files
  • PDF/DOC files with clickable links to active web pages
  • MP4 movie files
  • ZIP files

3. The entry form allows you to provide passwords or instructions for viewing links or files.

4. For files, upload each sample as a separate file.
